People-Fingers/Fish-Fingers (Proper Hand Formation)

Find a picture or video of a fish; point out the fish fins. There are no spaces between the fins. There are fine membranes, but no spaces. When we are on land we have People-Fingers” when we are in the water we use Fish-Fingers. People-Fingers are fingers that have open spaces between them while Fish-Fingers are fingers that stay “glued” together.

Take two plastic bowls or cups of the same size but different colors into the TUB. The parent will demonstrate using People-Fingers to try to scoop up bath water into one cup. In the other cup the parent will do the same using Fish-Fingers. Talk to your child as you view the two cups showing the discrepancy in the amount of water pictured between the two cups. It is your child’s turn to try the same techniques.

Hold one cup for your child as she tries to scoop up the water using People-Fingers. Count to 10 as she puts as much water into the first cup as possible. Place that cup on the edge of the tub. Take the other cup and ask her to scoop the water into the cup with their Fish-Fingers. Again, count to 10 as she scoops. Place the two cups side by side on the edge of the tub. Which cup has more water? Yes, the Fish-Fingers cup has more water because of the web effect of the fingers. Whenever your child is in the water and wants to move through the water, Fish-Fingers will help propel them the best. I use the term Fish-Fingers throughout a child’s swim lessons. Once she learns the term and you remind her of the words, you will see their little fingers go together immediately.
